Economic concepts related to the contribution of transportation to the economy

Personal spending on motor vehicles and parts includes spending on new motor vehicles, used vehicle purchases, and vehicle parts and accessories. The Bureau of Economic Analysis estimates personal consumption expenditures, the primary measure of consumer spending on goods and services in the U.S. economy, for each quarter and releases new statistics every month. Quarterly PCE data are seasonally adjusted at annual rates to remove the effects of normal seasonal variation.

The Bureau of Transportation Statistics calculates this index based on the American Trucking Association’s monthly Truck Tonnage Index.

Employed persons include people aged 16 years and older in the civilian noninstitutional population who did any work at all as paid employees; worked in their own business, profession, or on their own farm, or worked 15 hours or more as unpaid workers in an enterprise operated by a member of the family; and all those who were not working but who had jobs or businesses from which they were temporarily absent. The Bureau of Labor Statistics produces industry estimates of nonfarm payroll employment as part of the Current Population Survey.

List of cities served by a bikeshare (docked or dockless) and/or e-scooter system by month in 2020. Some systems serve more than one city. The layer lists just the primary city served. Bikeshare includes systems that are open to the general public, IT-automated, and station based (contain hubs to which users can grab and return a bike) as well as dockless systems. The layer includes a count of the number of docking stations, the number of dockless bikeshare systems, and the number of e-scooter systems serving a city (if applicable) in each month and the status of the system - whether temporarily suspended or closed. Many systems temporarily suspended operations and/or closed permanently in response to COVID-19.

Transportation total factor productivity

The U.S. Census Bureau provides monthly estimates of the total dollar value of construction work done in the United States as part of the Value of Construction Put in Place Survey (VIP). Includes construction related to pavement, lighting, retaining walls, tunnels, bridges, toll/weigh facilities, maintenance buildings, and rest facilities.
